MTV Movie Awards: As Laid-Back & Loose-Lipped As Ever
Fashion Wire Daily NY June 4, 2001
What begins with Shannon Elizabeth's breasts and ends with Hugh Jackman's chest? Not surprisingly, the 2001 MTV Movie Awards, held Saturday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
Pulling a J.Lo, Elizabeth made no apologies backstage for her barely-visible brown chiffon Anne Bowen outfit. "I wanted to have a good time. It's a fun outfit, and it's been awhile since I've dressed this way," she explained confidently to the press. And if you were planning on holding your breath for three hours to see Hugh Jackman's chest, don't. Suffice to say, Mr. Jackman is in desperate need of a good self-tanner and a merciless waxer.
In true MTV no-holds-barred form, the show, which was hosted by Kirsten Dunst and Jimmy Fallon, entailed an illustrious array of celebs engaging in SNL-like skits and bawdy behavior. The celebs let the laughter and expletives fly: Samuel L. Jackson questioning "Who's the second baddest mother-f---er after me?" Drea de Matteo stating "The letter W has a long and s----y history when it comes to band names," and good-girl Britney Spears asking Kirsten Dunst how she'd like an impression of her foot up her ass. It is definitely a rare occasion indeed when Lil' Kimand Sean "Puffy" Combs are the least provocative of the bunch.
Fashion-wise, there were some cute summery outfits. Cameron Diaz looked beach-bum chic in a rainbow striped bandeau, a white flowing skirt, and dreadlocks; Sofia Coppola was cocktail party pretty in Marc Jacobs; and Mandy Moore was in a pink babydoll dress. The get-up of choice appeared to be jeans, stilettos, and an interesting top, as evidenced by Piper Perabo in a Chloe turquoise blouse, Rhea Durham in a gold lamé number, and Julia Stiles in a belly-baring Mets halter.
But lest anyone forget this is an awards show, some of the winners included Tom Cruise for Best Male Performance in Mission Impossible II, Julia Roberts for Best Female Performance in Erin Brockovich, Gladiator won Best Movie, Sean Patrick Thomas and Julia Stiles for Best Kiss in Save the Last Dance, and Robert De Niro's question in Meet the Parents -- "Are you a pothead, Focker?" -- for Best Line from a Movie.
Kirsten Dunst looked elegant in a mini-halter cocktail dress by Italian designer Stefano Guerriero.
Tommy Lee and Sean Combs, both eligible bachelors, strut their stuff with style. There's no sign of Tommy's tattoos inside his pinstriped Dolce & Gabbana suit with white satin tie. Sean Combs also looks pretty fine in a well cut blue suit and striped tie.
